Designing our Garage Doors with Haas Door

Filed in: Design, Exterior

When we started looking at exterior finishes for the house one of the big things I noticed that always seemed to be pushed to the back burner was garages. Since our garage is attached to the house, we knew we needed to give it the same TLC as the rest of our home’s exterior.

I started the hunt with driving around our neighborhood to see if there were any garage doors that caught me eye. Then I took to the internet’s blackhole when you’re stuck in a design predicament – Pinterest. I started seeing these gorgeous wood carriage style garage doors, but knew they’d be way out of our budget since we needed three. All in all, I started hunting for a similar look that would be in our price range. I stumbled on the Haas Door website and found my perfect solutions – a garage door with the look of wood, but one that would last twice as long without the maintenance.

We weren’t going to mess around with what can be a pretty dangerous process of installing these babies, so we reached out to Mammoth Door. I explained roughly what type of door style we were looking for and luckily they pointed us in the direction of the HaasCreate garage door designer. Guys – I think I played on this site for HOURS.

I started by uploading a photo of our current garage – excuse the huge work in progress – and marked out where the garage doors would be placed, along with selecting the shape we were going for.

From there we got to look through different door series. The American Traditions was that same carriage style door that we were looking for, so I got to work trying the different styles on our garage. We narrowed down to the vertical overlap pieces and the crossed overlay pieces.

For the exterior we’re going pretty traditional to what the house would have looked like back in the 1860’s, but are adding a few modern touches. This was the perfect opportunity to add in some modern flare, so vertical panels won.

With our house/garage/yard/everything being so disheveled it was super hard to imagine what the different colors would look like for the doors. The color matching with the HaasCreate app was a life saver. I mocked up a version in American Walnut for Sean to see, with a little more modern window layout.

Getting to look at it I thought it might be a little too dark for what we were going for. I changed gears and did a version in Ash and holy smokes, I LOVED IT!!

From here we could play around and see the different glass options they offered, decorative handles and even the hinge hardware.

Sean didn’t think we needed handles or hinges – but the rendering really saved the day. They’re like the icing on the cake of these gorgeous doors. Once we had everything narrowed down we clicked Review and got a nice little spec sheet on the doors!

I’m so impressed over here I took some after photos once Mammoth Door knocked our install out of the park. Look how close the HaasCreate design is to our final installed doors. I am seriously blown away over here!

Before we finalized our order we actually got to look through the different glass samples and the door finish samples that we had it narrowed down to. Sean is a SUPER visual creature, so getting to go through these was a game changer too. Here’s a quick video on my thoughts/design process/ramblings:

We’ll definitely be using the Haas Door/Mammoth Door combo for all of our future garage door projects! It’s pretty safe to say we never thought we could love garage doors this much! For more install photos be sure to check out our blog post from one of our favorite days on the farm here.
